Unexpected Visitor: Snake Makes an Appearance During NLCS Playoff Game
The October 14, 2024, Game 2 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets took an unexpected turn when a snake slithered into the Dodgers’ dugout. At the end of the fifth inning, pitcher Brent Honeywell noticed the slithering intruder, which was soon captured on camera by Fox Sports. The unusual sight left both fans and players stunned as the creature made its way through the dugout, sparking plenty of laughs and confusion among the players.
Play-by-play announcer Joe Davis couldn’t resist a joke, remarking, “We’ve had Snakes on a Plane, Snakes on a Train, and the latest Hollywood hit, Snake in the Dugout,” lightening the mood amid the surreal moment. While the snake’s appearance quickly became a major talking point, Honeywell managed to stay remarkably calm throughout the situation.
“It’s the playoffs,” Honeywell said with a grin after the game. “You’re bound to see anything.” The pitcher also joked that the snake might be a good omen for the team, calling it a “rally snake,” hoping it would spark some positive energy.
Rallying After the Snake Sighting
As if on cue, the Dodgers responded with some offensive firepower following the snake sighting. Just moments after the creature made its brief cameo, Max Muncy hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Dodgers followed up with two more runs in the sixth, briefly taking the lead. However, the momentum didn’t last, and despite the rally, the Dodgers ultimately lost the game 7-3, evening the best-of-seven series at 1-1.
While the snake didn’t provide the spark for a complete turnaround, it certainly added a memorable moment to the game, with fans and players alike talking about the unexpected guest.
A Familiar Experience for Honeywell
For Honeywell, this wasn’t the first time he had encountered an animal in a dugout. Back in 2015, while playing for the Charlotte Knights in the minor leagues, he stumbled upon a 10-foot alligator in the dugout. Honeywell recalled the bizarre moment with a sense of humor, explaining to MiLB.com at the time that the alligator must have entered the dugout through an open gate in the outfield. The alligator had apparently walked down the track and stairs to find its way into the dugout, making for an unforgettable memory early in Honeywell’s career.
“I don’t know if he came up from the pond behind left field, but I guess he walked the track and down the stairs and into the dugout,” Honeywell said with a chuckle.
Looking Ahead
As the series heads into Game 3, the Dodgers and Mets are tied 1-1, and the unexpected visit from the snake has only added to the intrigue of this already intense postseason matchup. With the unpredictability of the playoffs, it seems that anything can happen—even with a surprise animal guest in the dugout! Fans will be eagerly watching to see how the series unfolds, and whether the Dodgers can find their rhythm after the wild Game 2.
