This celebrated piece, which was initially unveiled by Banksy in 2005, was part of the collection belonging to Mark Hoppus, bassist for the California punk rock band Blink-182. Hoppus has expressed admiration for Banksy, viewing him as a “kindred spirit.” Following the auction, a portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to two medical charities in Los Angeles and the California Fire Foundation, supporting relief efforts after severe wildfires in January.

Mark Hoppus remarked on his attraction to Banksy’s work, stating, “I feel like street art and punk rock have the same core… Just go make art. It’s the same spirit. And I’ve loved art and especially street art ever since realizing that.” He praised the subversive and humorous nature of Banksy’s art, drawing parallels between it and his own upbringing in skate culture.

Artwork Background and Inspiration

“Crude Oil (Vettriano)” is part of a series where Banksy adds contemporary and often satirical elements to classic artwork. In this case, the painting draws its inspiration from Vettriano’s famous 1992 piece, “The Singing Butler.” Vettriano’s original depicted a couple dancing on a beach with umbrellas held up by attendants, while Banksy reimagines this scene with additional elements like an oil liner and figures carrying toxic waste barrels.

Tributes to Jack Vettriano

The timing of this auction coincided with tributes following the recent passing of Jack Vettriano, who died in France at the age of 73. Known for his romantic and dreamlike portrayals of elegance, Vettriano had a significant following, including notable figures like actor Jack Nicholson.

Reflecting on the painting’s journey, Hoppus shared, “We loved this painting since the moment we saw it,” highlighting that the artwork has been part of his family’s collection since they acquired it in 2011.

Proceeding with a Purpose

In addition to purchasing upcoming artists’ work, Hoppus plans to allocate funds from this sale to support the California Fire Foundation, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Cedars Sinai Hematology Oncology Research.
