Real ID Compliance Deadline Approaching: What You Need to Know
As the May 7 deadline for obtaining a Real ID draws near, many Americans are racing to meet the new identification requirements mandated by Congress in the wake of the September 11 attacks. These IDs significantly enhance security measures and are designed to be more resistant to counterfeiting.
Current Compliance Rates
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), approximately 81% of travelers are currently compliant at airport checkpoints, meaning they possess either a Real ID or a valid passport. However, this statistic indicates that nearly 20% of individuals passing through security do not yet have the required documentation.
TSA spokesperson Patricia Mancha emphasized the importance of presenting the correct travel documents: “Everybody is responsible for presenting the proper travel documents when they come to the checkpoint.” She also warned that travelers without the necessary ID on May 7 may experience delays, although the TSA has not yet specified the details of the enforcement strategy.
Increased Demand at DMVs
The looming deadline has caused a surge in traffic at Department of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) nationwide. Reports from Miami-Dade County, Florida, indicate that some individuals have resorted to scalping appointments for as much as $250, highlighting the intense demand for Real ID applications. Local resident Lizzie Colindres remarked on the frustration caused by the wait times: “Not a good idea at all. We’ve been waiting for hours.”
State-Specific Status Updates
In Illinois, where statewide compliance is around 33%, officials have opened a first-of-its-kind Real ID supercenter, located in a former Walgreens store. This facility is capable of processing approximately 1,500 ID applications daily, demonstrating an innovative approach to the overwhelming demand.
Steps to Obtain a Real ID
To acquire a Real ID, individuals must visit their local DMV and present the following documentation:
- A valid form of identification (e.g., passport or birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security number
- Verification of date of birth
- Two documents confirming state residency
While the deadline is approaching, it remains possible to obtain a Real ID after May 7.
Identifying Your Current ID Status
To determine if your current ID is compliant, look for a star in the upper right corner of the card; this marking signifies that it is a Real ID. Additionally, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs) and IDs (EIDs), which include an American flag and the word “Enhanced,” can serve as alternatives to meet Real ID requirements. Currently, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington issue EDLs and EIDs.
