Hang Out Events Rock connects small businesses, crafters, and vendors in Minnesota, promoting local talent and creativity.
Hang Out Events Rock brings together small businesses, crafters, and vendors from across Minnesota, creating a platform to showcase local talent and creativity. Recognizing the challenges small businesses face in standing out, one woman set out to make a difference. She saw a gap in the market and an opportunity to create a space where local entrepreneurs and makers could collaborate and thrive. Thus, Hang Out Events Rock was born. Founded in 2022 by Jennifer “Jen” Hillesheim, what began as a simple initiative to support local artisans has since grown into a series of lively craft and vendor fairs throughout Southern Minnesota—an exciting fusion of creativity and community in one welcoming space.
A Vision Built from a Need
Jen Hillesheim, the founder of Hang Out Events Rock knows firsthand the struggles small businesses face. As a single mother and local crafter, she was inspired by her own experiences navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. “I started this business because I saw the challenges small businesses were facing, especially those run by creatives,” Jen says. “They didn’t have enough exposure, and many people didn’t even know they existed.”
Seeing the need for a platform where small businesses could thrive and connect, she set out to create a unique space that would not only help these businesses grow but also foster a sense of community. Her goal was clear: help local makers, crafters, and small business owners by providing a supportive environment that would benefit everyone involved.
Why “Hang Out” Events?
Unlike traditional craft fairs, Hang Out Events Rock isn’t just about buying and selling, it’s about creating an experience. The term “hangout” isn’t used lightly. At these events, the focus is on creating a fun, relaxed, and welcoming environment where community members can shop, mingle, and have fun. The fairs feature a variety of vendors selling everything from handmade goods to homemade food, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Held at venues such as schools in Southern Minnesota, the events offer more than just space for vendors. These venues help support local education programs, with a portion of the event proceeds going toward funding schools. “I wanted to hold the events at schools because they have the space, and by hosting these events there, we can give back to the community,” says Jen. Local food trucks are also a staple at every event, helping to further support small business owners and add to the fun atmosphere.
A Family Affair: Crafting and Giving Back
The personal connection to these events is part of what makes them so special. As a crafter herself, Jen and her mother are regular participants, running a booth at every event. “Crafting has always been a passion for me and my mom, and we’re proud to share our creations with the community,” she shares. Whether it’s handmade goods or personalized products, the founder brings a hands-on, personal touch to everything she does.
In addition to crafting, Jen also represents Pampered Chef, a brand focused on making kitchen cooking and meal prep easier. As a busy mom herself, she’s a strong believer in the value of products that simplify life. “Pampered Chef products are amazing for anyone who wants to make cooking quicker and easier, and I love being able to share them with others,” Jen explains.
Her journey has also become a family affair beyond business, she’s taken in another teen to give both of her sons a broader view of the world. “I want them to know that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything,” she says, adding that she strives to create a positive and nurturing environment where young people can learn, grow, and see that the world is a good place.
Community-Centered: Connecting Vendors and Customers
At the heart of Hang Out Events Rock is the community. Jen’s commitment to supporting local small businesses is clear in every event, as she strives to bring together a variety of unique vendors who reflect the diversity of the community. “I try to offer a good mix of unique, creative, crafty, handmade, homemade, and small business products,” she says. The events offer a place for local vendors to connect with new customers, showcase their talents, and grow their businesses.
For the attendees, these events provide a chance to discover new and exciting products they might not find elsewhere. Whether it’s a beautiful handmade necklace, delicious homemade jam, or a new favorite local food truck, there’s always something new and exciting at a Hang Out event.
“It’s about creating opportunities for people to experience local talent and build relationships,” Jen explains. “When you buy something from a small business, you’re not just buying a product, you’re supporting a dream.”
Why It’s Different: Hang Out, Don’t Just Shop
What makes Hang Out Events Rock stand out from other local markets and craft fairs is the emphasis on experience. While shopping is an important part of the events, the atmosphere is equally vital. “We want people to feel like they’re not just at a market, they’re at a fun event, hanging out with friends, enjoying good food, and discovering something new,” Jen says.
The events also focus on making everything accessible: from free admission and free parking to food and entertainment, it’s all designed to ensure that people of all ages can enjoy the day without any stress. There are also giveaways and drawings at every event, which adds an extra layer of excitement for attendees.
