Los Angeles FC made club history at BMO Stadium, capturing its first-ever U.S. Open Cup title with a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory over Sporting Kansas City. The hard-fought match saw LAFC rally from behind before delivering a dominant extra-time performance to secure the championship.

A Tight Battle in Regulation

The match began with both sides showing attacking intent, but it was Sporting KC that struck first in the 34th minute. Forward Alan Pulido finished off a well-worked attacking sequence, slotting the ball past LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to give the visitors the early lead.

LAFC responded with increased pressure in the second half, controlling possession and creating several dangerous opportunities. Their persistence finally paid off in the 72nd minute when captain Carlos Vela found the net with a perfectly placed shot from just outside the box, bringing the home crowd to life.

Despite late chances for both teams, the 90-minute battle ended in a stalemate, forcing extra time to determine the 2024 U.S. Open Cup champion.

LAFC Takes Control in Extra Time

With momentum on their side, LAFC wasted little time seizing control in extra time. In the 98th minute, Denis Bouanga capitalized on a pinpoint pass from Ilie Sánchez, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to give LAFC a 2-1 lead. The stadium erupted as the home side edged closer to lifting the trophy.

Sporting KC pushed for an equalizer, but LAFC’s defense held firm, denying their opponents any clear scoring chances. In the 116th minute, Cristian Olivera put the game beyond reach, firing a powerful shot past the goalkeeper to seal the 3-1 victory.

A Landmark Victory for LAFC

The win marks a major milestone for LAFC, adding its first U.S. Open Cup trophy to an already impressive collection of domestic titles since its MLS debut in 2018. Head coach Steve Cherundolo praised his squad’s determination, highlighting their ability to respond under pressure.

“This team thrives in big moments,” Cherundolo said after the match. “We never panicked, we stayed patient, and we found a way to win. I couldn’t be prouder of this group.”

What’s Next for LAFC?

With the U.S. Open Cup secured, LAFC now turns its focus back to MLS competition, where it remains a contender for postseason success. Meanwhile, Sporting KC will look to regroup and finish the season strong, despite falling short in their bid for a second Open Cup title.

As the celebrations continue in Los Angeles, this victory further cements LAFC’s reputation as one of the premier clubs in North American soccer.
