Nate Burleson Confronts His Fear of Sharks in Oahu
Far from the shore of Oahu’s North Shore, the vibrant and turbulent waters of the Pacific Ocean are home to the Galapagos shark, a species often misunderstood. Recently, Nate Burleson, co-host of CBS Mornings, took a bold step by swimming among these awe-inspiring creatures, confronting a long-standing fear as part of the “Never Too Late” series that showcases life-changing experiences.
An Adventurous Encounter
During this thrilling expedition, Burleson faced nine Galapagos sharks, some growing to over 10 feet in length, complete with 14 rows of sharp teeth. Reflecting on the dive, he remarked, “They are so majestic, powerful. Unbelievable man. I can’t believe I did that.” His experience was a remarkable follow-up to a prior adrenaline-fueled skydiving adventure alongside the U.S. Army.
Insights from Experts
Dr. Andrew Rossiter, who serves as the director of the Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu, addressed common misconceptions about sharks, asserting that while these creatures are indeed predators, humans do not fall within their natural prey range. “I’ve literally seen hundreds and hundreds of sharks while I’ve been diving,” Dr. Rossiter stated. “Not so much scared, but I’ve always been in awe of them, because I know what they could do, potentially.”
Family Concerns
While Burleson embraced the adventure, his mother expressed trepidation upon hearing about her son’s plans. “Oh, I don’t feel good about that at all,” she voiced. “I don’t trust you. I don’t trust the sharks and I don’t trust the water! Period!” Despite her worries, Burleson discovered a surprising sense of calm while submerged in the ocean.
A Changed Perspective
Burleson reflected on his experience, sharing, “I felt comfortable around them. The way they circle around, and like peep you out… if you look at them and you’re like ‘what’s up fam?’ They will just cruise on by. It’s amazing.” He noted a newfound respect for these ocean dwellers, a shift influenced by the cultural impact of 1975’s iconic film “Jaws,” which has shaped public perception of sharks.
