New York City Launches Universal Paid Family Leave for All Residents

In a historic move aimed at supporting families across the city, New York City has officially rolled out a Universal Paid Family Leave program for all residents. Announced on January 12, 2025, the initiative guarantees up to 12 weeks of paid leave for workers taking time off to care for a newborn, adopt a child, or assist a family member in need of medical care. This program marks a significant expansion of the city’s family support infrastructure, making it the first major U.S. city to offer such a wide-reaching benefit to all residents, regardless of employer size or income.

The initiative was unveiled by Mayor Eric Adams, who called the new policy a “game changer” for families in New York City. New York City businesses with 10 or more employees will be required to participate, contributing a small percentage of payroll to fund the program, while smaller employers can opt in voluntarily. The program is designed to be as inclusive as possible, ensuring that workers from all sectors, including gig and freelance workers, can benefit.

The new policy comes as part of a broader effort to support workers and families in a city known for its high cost of living.
