Christina Najjar, widely recognized by her online persona Tinx, has transitioned from social media star to author with the release of her debut novel, Hotter in the Hamptons. The book, which debuted on Tuesday, addresses the challenges of cancel culture, personal reinvention, and romance.
A Glimpse into the Plot
The novel centers on Lola Fine, a content creator based in New York City. After experiencing a public cancellation, she retreats to the Hamptons for the summer, where she encounters a culture critic known for writing a damaging exposé about her. Despite their rocky history, Lola finds herself in an unexpected romantic relationship as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
Complex Characters and Authenticity
Najjar emphasizes the importance of creating multi-dimensional characters. “I really wanted my heroine to be complicated and layered, because we’re all complicated and layered,” she explained during an interview with CBS Mornings. “I wanted her to be messy so that readers could see themselves in her, because we’re really all imperfect. We’re all works in progress.”
The Hamptons: A Setting Filled with Drama
The choice of the Hamptons as a setting is significant for Najjar. She notes, “My followers know my obsession with rich mom places. And it’s shrouded in mystery. It’s luxurious. A lot of drama goes down there.” The backdrop enhances the narrative by incorporating real locations familiar to readers.
Representation in Literature
While the book includes elements of queer romance, it has faced some criticism due to Najjar’s identity as a straight woman. To ensure authentic representation, Najjar collaborated with a queer individual. “I think it’s important to have a queer voice in the room, and that’s why I wanted to work with a queer collaborator,” she stated. “We got that lived experience in the book and I think we nailed it.”
