Controversy Surrounds Smithsonian and Gender Representation

Executive Order Raises Questions

In a 2023 Congressional oversight committee meeting, a former individual involved expressed concerns regarding a document presented in relation to the Smithsonian’s initiatives. “I think the document itself was wrong and flawed,” the individual stated. However, they emphasized the significance of the Smithsonian’s role in confronting issues of race, stating, “I do think, however, it’s important for the Smithsonian to help the country grapple with questions of race.” The statement concluded with a critique of the document’s appropriateness for the museum.

American Women’s History Museum Under Scrutiny

The recent executive order from former President Trump specifically targeted plans for the American Women’s History Museum, which is currently in its developmental phase. The order claimed that the museum “plans to celebrate male athletes participating in women’s sports.” This assertion has sparked widespread debate, particularly as the museum’s collections feature notable figures such as Sylvia Rivera, a prominent activist from the 1969 Stonewall uprising, and Cher Strauberry, a professional skateboarder.

Despite these inclusions, the details regarding the physical location of the museum remain unspecified, as planners are still in search of a permanent space on the National Mall.

Perspectives from the Museum Community

Laura Raicovich, a former museum executive and author of a text exploring art and activism, commented on the implications of the executive order, describing it as a significant example of governmental influence over historical narrative. She remarked, “The order itself is a clear example of the weaponization of language by the administration to undo the necessary historical correctives undertaken by knowledge institutions in recent years.”

Defense of Smithsonian Practices

In light of the controversy, some historians have come forward to defend the integrity of the Smithsonian. James Grossman, executive director of the American Historical Association, highlighted that the fact sheet accompanying the executive order “egregiously misrepresents the work of the Smithsonian.” He asserted that the institution’s scholarly work is rooted in evidence-based historical research.

“The historical scholarship in the Smithsonian is careful, honest and based on historical evidence,” Grossman stated. He acknowledged that the history examined by historians encompasses both elements of national pride and aspects that provoke critical reflection and learning.
