Uzo Aduba Discusses Her Role in ‘The Residence’ and the Joys of Motherhood
Character Insights in ‘The Residence’
Uzo Aduba stars in Netflix’s new murder-mystery series, The Residence, where she brings to life the character of Cordelia Cupp, a highly skilled detective. In the storyline, Cupp is called to investigate all individuals present at the White House during a state dinner following a mysterious death. The detective is noted for her unique approach to investigations, which includes her birdwatching hobby.
Describing her character, Aduba remarked, “I loved her quirky little behaviors,” and emphasized Cupp’s commitment to her work, stating, “She’s excellent at her job and she loves it.” Aduba characterized Cupp as “fearless” and “lethal,” commending her ability to maintain an emotionless facade to prevent suspects from gaining insight into her thoughts.
Working with Shonda Rhimes
Aduba collaborates with renowned executive producer Shonda Rhimes, known for creating popular series such as Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. Although Aduba had previously admired Rhimes from afar, she expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity to work alongside her, stating, “I was a huge, huge Shonda Rhimes fan, did not miss a Thursday with ‘Scandal.'” She went on to praise Rhimes as “one of our best in the television world.”
Reflection on Past Roles
Aduba’s previous performance as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the critically acclaimed series Orange is the New Black also resonates with her current role. She believes both characters exhibit an unapologetic authenticity: “Both people are unapologetically themselves,” she said, drawing parallels between the two roles. “Crazy Eyes” represents someone who is “pure, so honest,” embodying her true self without concern for external judgment.
The Impact of Motherhood
Beyond her professional achievements, Aduba opened up about the transformative influence of her 1-year-old daughter on her life in a conversation with CBS Mornings. She reflected on the larger pursuit of fulfillment beyond her career, saying, “I think for me there were so many things outside of myself… I just didn’t know there was another level to love.” This newfound level of love, she suggests, has contributed to her overall sense of peace and balance amid the demands of a busy lifestyle.
