Ayush Singh turned self-taught AI expertise into entrepreneurship and mentorship, helping engineers build skills and navigate career growth.
A self-taught machine learning engineer who began building his career during his family’s financial crisis, Ayush Singh has become known for his work in AI education, engineering, and mentorship. Today, he runs the AI Placement Sprint on Topmate, helping aspiring AI engineers develop technical skills and prepare for opportunities with global startups.
Across India, many capable engineers face intense competition when applying for jobs through traditional channels. Hiring processes often prioritize credentials and resumes, making it difficult for talented candidates to showcase their practical abilities.
Ayush Singh followed a different path. Before earning a college degree, he built technical projects, developed expertise in machine learning, and connected directly with industry professionals. He now shares those experiences with engineers seeking alternative ways to build careers in artificial intelligence.
At age 14, Ayush developed a machine learning course for freeCodeCamp that was later highlighted by MIT’s official social media account. He also began gaining professional experience in AI and machine learning while still in his early teens.
Today, he leads the AI Placement Sprint, an 18-week mentorship program available through Topmate that helps engineers strengthen their portfolios, develop practical AI skills, and prepare for opportunities with global startups.
How Financial Hardships Shaped a Tech Child Prodigy from India
Singh’s journey began during a period of financial uncertainty.
His family lived comfortably in Patna, India, until the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his father’s business and created significant financial challenges for the household.
Faced with limited options, Ayush decided to pursue technology through self-directed learning. He studied programming, mathematics, machine learning concepts, and software development using books, online lectures, and educational resources.
He often balanced school responsibilities with long hours of independent study, building projects and developing practical skills that could demonstrate his abilities.
At age 13, Ayush reached out directly to the founder of a German machine learning startup. After completing technical assessments and interviews, he secured a role with the company, gaining early exposure to professional software development and AI systems.
“I had no degree and no shortcut, so I built proof of what I could do and took it straight to the people who had the power to hire me,” Singh says.
From a Self-Taught Engineer at 13 to a Founder at 18
Ayush continued building experience across multiple technology companies.
He worked on machine learning and data science projects while gaining insight into how startups evaluate talent and solve business challenges through technology.
As his experience grew, he began building companies of his own.
He founded Antern, an education platform that uses AI to make machine learning training more accessible and practical for aspiring engineers.
He also co-founded Second Brain Labs, an AI company focused on helping businesses automate sales, support, and customer communication processes.
The experiences he gained as both an engineer and entrepreneur now influence the mentorship programs he leads.
Turning a Personal Method into a Mentorship That’s Now Helping Fellow AI Engineers
The challenges Ayush encountered early in his career inspired him to create the AI Placement Sprint.
The program is designed to help engineers develop practical skills, build portfolios, improve professional visibility, and better understand how startup hiring processes work.
Over 18 weeks, participants work on several areas of professional development:
- Building production-level AI projects that demonstrate practical engineering skills.
- Learning outreach strategies for connecting with startup founders and hiring teams.
- Strengthening their professional presence on platforms such as LinkedIn.
- Preparing for interviews and professional conversations with employers.
According to information published by the program, participants have used these strategies to pursue opportunities with startups and technology companies around the world.
“You cannot fake judgment, and that is exactly what global founders are looking for when evaluating technical talent,” Singh says.
Rising Demand from AI Engineers
Interest in the AI Placement Sprint has continued to grow among engineers seeking alternatives to traditional job application processes.
Ayush maintains relatively small cohorts, allowing him to provide direct feedback and personalized guidance throughout the program.
His approach is rooted in the same principles that shaped his own career: demonstrating skills through real work, building meaningful professional relationships, and focusing on practical problem-solving.
A Holistic Approach to Building Global Careers
Singh combines technical experience with firsthand knowledge of startup hiring practices.
This combination allows him to help participants understand both the technical and professional aspects of career development.
The program focuses not only on engineering skills but also on communication, visibility, networking, and long-term professional growth.
Shambhavi, a participant in a recent cohort, says the experience expanded her perspective on career opportunities.
“I came in chasing a full-time job, and now I see client work as a whole new game. Ayush showed me how to operate, and that changed how I see myself,” she says.
For Singh, the mission remains personal.
He remembers how difficult it was to navigate the technology industry without traditional advantages, and he hopes to help other engineers build confidence in their abilities.
“Skill should open doors, not pedigree, and I want every engineer I work with to prove that for themselves,” Singh says.
