OpenAI and NVIDIA Back Massive Ohio AI Infrastructure Project

A large-scale artificial-intelligence infrastructure project announced Monday in southern Ohio is set to combine one of the world's leading AI companies with NVIDIA computing technology and a major data-center development effort.

OpenAI said it had entered an agreement to secure approximately 8 gigawatts of IT capacity at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County. SB Energy will develop, own and operate the facility, while NVIDIA will provide the computing infrastructure.

The project illustrates the enormous physical infrastructure increasingly required to power advanced AI systems.

Why a data center matters to AI

AI applications may appear primarily as software, but the systems behind them require large amounts of computing power.

Data centers house the servers, networking equipment and energy systems needed to run those workloads. As AI models become more demanding, companies need access to increasingly large computing clusters.

OpenAI said the Ohio project would provide approximately 8 gigawatts of IT capacity. NVIDIA said it would initially support 4.25 gigawatts of capacity through land, power and shell arrangements, with additional capacity possible.

The scale demonstrates why electricity and physical infrastructure have become central issues in the AI industry.

Investment reaches beyond technology

NVIDIA announced that it would invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy as part of the project. The company also said it would provide credit support associated with the initial infrastructure buildout.

OpenAI said the project is expected to create 35,000 construction jobs during a six-year buildout and approximately 2,500 long-term operating jobs.

Those figures show how an AI project can have economic consequences outside the technology sector.

Building a large data center requires construction workers, engineers, electrical specialists, equipment suppliers, network professionals and long-term facility operators.

Community investment

The companies also announced community commitments connected with the project.

OpenAI said it would contribute $40 million to a community grant fund, alongside a separate $40 million commitment from SB Energy. The company said the investment would support priorities identified by local residents.

OpenAI also said it would provide $84 million in Codex credits giving Ohio college students access to its technology.

These commitments reflect a growing issue surrounding large technology infrastructure projects: communities increasingly evaluate developments not only on employment but also on their impact on local resources and economic activity.

The energy challenge

Large AI data centers require substantial electricity, making energy availability a strategic concern for technology companies.

NVIDIA's announcement specifically focused on securing land, power and the physical shell of the data center.

That emphasis indicates how AI infrastructure is becoming tied to broader energy and industrial-development decisions.

The project is not simply about installing computers. Developers must coordinate land, electricity, construction, networking and financing before large-scale computing capacity can become operational.

What the project means for ordinary Americans

For consumers, the most immediate effects of projects like PORTS-Pike may not be visible.

People interact with AI through phones, computers and software platforms, but those services depend on physical facilities that may be hundreds or thousands of miles away.

More computing capacity can help AI companies support growing demand and develop increasingly sophisticated systems. It can also create local economic activity in communities where facilities are constructed.

At the same time, large infrastructure projects can raise questions about electricity, water use, land and local development. OpenAI said the project would pay its project-specific energy and infrastructure costs and use water responsibly.

A sign of AI's physical expansion

The Ohio development demonstrates that the AI boom is increasingly becoming an infrastructure story.

The industry now requires enormous facilities, specialized chips, power systems and long-term capital commitments. Companies competing in AI therefore have to consider physical capacity alongside research and software development.

OpenAI and NVIDIA said they would collaborate on infrastructure design and testing and share technical lessons from the project.

The PORTS-Pike announcement is significant because it shows how quickly AI is expanding beyond computer screens into large physical infrastructure projects.
